Past participants share their "why" ...

Marty Kay, a Fleurieu Future Leaders alumnus and Branch Manager, Elders Kingscote.

The KI Future Leaders Program was a transformative experience that helped me confront imposter syndrome and rediscover my self-worth. At first, I questioned my abilities and whether I belonged. Lessons from alumni speakers and my cohort helped me confront self-doubt and embrace my strengths unapologetically. The program taught me that growth comes from stepping outside my comfort zone—through tough conversations, unexpected challenges, or vulnerability. It helped me honour my achievements and realise I belong in any room I step into.

Future Leaders encouraged me to embrace my voice and showed me that my experiences, insights, and even my uncertainties, have value when shared. Without this program, I would have continued to be held back by my self doubt. Forming strong connections with others within my community has also been a highlight for me during this program. Connections which I will have for a life time. Overall, it has been a transformative experience and I’m grateful for what it still continues to teach me in both my professional and personal life.

I wanted to become a better leader in my community. Through this program, I’ve been reminded of the kind of life I want to live. I gained something even more valuable – clarity. A stronger sense of who I am, what I want, and what makes me happiest.

I didn’t know what to expect, but I wanted to push myself into new ideas. The program content was stimulating and meaningful, and I would encourage anyone to consider the KIFLP for personal development. I only wish I had the opportunity years earlier.

To describe KIFLP as simply a “program” or a “course” doesn’t do it justice. It’s much more of a journey than anything else. At times it can be confronting, reflective and deeply honest, but it is also incredibly rewarding. It genuinely changed my life. It pushed me to reflect on who I am, the areas I still need to work on, and the kind of person and leader I want to be. It helped me to be honest with myself and understand that growth often comes from leaning into the uncomfortable parts of ourselves.
